Just as they had in their last few games, the Loyola Greyhounds womenís soccer found themselves in an early hole.

This time however, the Greyhounds would be unable to stage yet another late rally, falling 2-0 to the West Virginia Mountaineers in the first round of the NCAA College Cup.

The loss snapped the program-record 14 game unbeaten streak for Loyola, who finished the season with an impressive 15-4-2 record.

The Hounds found themselves in a 1-0 hole just under 90 seconds into the contest, a deficit from which the team would never recover.

All-American forward Carolyn Blank scored the goal for the Mountaineers that would ultimately stand as the game- winner.

Prior to the game, coach Katherine Vettori noted the importance of not falling into an early hole by shoring up their defensive organization among other things.

On this day however, the Big East power would prove to be too much for the Hounds.

West Virginia would tack on one more insurance goal in the 36th minute, giving them a 2-0 lead that would stand for the remainder of the game.

The Hounds would not lie down in the second half however, and instead would come out fighting, a common trend for the squad this season.

Freshman goalkeeper Danielle Ippolitio would record a career-high five saves on the day, setting the bar high as she looks ahead to next season.

Despite the loss, the game was one that will be remembered as Theresa Ferrainaís 83rd career game as a Greyhound, a Loyola record.

The team will certainly have high expectations headed into next season, especially with all of the major contributions the team received from freshmen Nichole Schiro, Tessa McClenahan, and Gianna Mangione.

Coach Vettori will have to replace a strong senior class, but should find leadership by way of Kelly Thomas and Kelly Farrell among others.

Despite the earlier then hoped for exit from the College Cup, the Hounds will be able to look back at this season as of one of great success on a team and individual level.

The Hounds were able to go undefeated in the MAAC, and Ferraina was among the top ten for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award, both of which are great accomplishments and show the nation what type of program Loyola has.

Something that's certain is that the women's team for next year has a lot to live up to after this year's team.
