Letter to the Editor: Response to recent editorial cartoon
Issue date: 10/9/07 Section: Opinion

I would like to comment on the editorial cartoon in the Oct. 2 issue of The Greyhound.
It decried Congress's "rolling over" for the NRA in allowing the Assault Weapon Ban to expire and the resulting police deaths. According to the FBI and Department of Justice, fewer police officers were killed by rifles ("assault" or otherwise) in 2005 than in any year during the ban.
Hardly an epidemic increase.
Additionally, one could accuse Congress of rolling over, but our representatives are elected to voice the will of their constituents. Over 4 million Americans (the estimated membership of the NRA) is a loud voice. As a final note, the cartoon depicts an AK-47 assault rifle.
These are fully automatic rifles and heavily restricted under a 1934 law; the 1994 crime bill only banned semi-automatic copies that looked like one.
Thank you.
