Hyped up Hounds hope to avoid complacency

Hyped up Hounds hope to avoid complacency
By Brian Hungarter Associate Sports Editor Oh, what a difference one year can make. Coming into the 2007 campaign, the men's soccer team was touted as a young squad given the possibility to compete based upon pure talent. The same team was also taken with a grain of salt and viewed as being at least one year away from becoming any serious threat.

So far so perfect for dominating Hounds
By Brian Hungarter Associate Sports Editor Every question of complacency seems to be answered as the men's soccer team showed their strength going 2-0 in the Black & Decker Soccer Classic, beating both Fordham and Hartwick 2-0, then extending their winning streak to three with a 2-1 victory at Towson on Sunday.

By Kyle Anderson Staff Writer As the women's volleyball team starts their 2008 season, they will have a new head coach. The Greyhounds' director of athletics, Joe Boylan, announced that Scott Pennewill will be the new head coach of the Women's team. Pennewill boasts an impressive coaching resume, as he has coached in divisions I, II, and III.

Midfield machine keeps humming for Hounds

By Dave Lomonico Associate Sports Editor Like an offensive lineman in football or a catcher in baseball, soccer midfielders are the glue that holds the unit together. Underappreciated by casual fans but admired by teammates and coaches, midfielders define ruggedness, cohesion and nuance.

By Pete Theis Staff Writer After a strong 2007 season in which the team captured the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championship and advanced to the College Cup, the Loyola Women's soccer team looks poised for more this season. They have a new coach at the helm in Katherine Vettori and a veteran squad eager to go deep in the playoffs.

Emotion is key for college sports outdoing the pros

By Matt Kiebus Staff Writer Welcome back to another year of shenanigans and good-hearted foolishness in the Charm City. This is the time of the year when old friends reunite, summer fades, leaves change color, the Mets hopefully don't choke, and most importantly, football season starts.

Young cross country runners show signs of promising future

Young cross country runners show signs of promising future
By Dave Lomonico Associate Sports Editor In their first meet of the season, the Loyola cross country team stocked its lineup with underclassmen in the Baltimore Metro Invitational at Towson, but the results resembled those of a veteran squad. The men, led by four freshmen and one sophomore, placed second in the six-team race behind Johns Hopkins.

Jimmy Patsos parlays success into contract extension

Rest assured, Hounds fans, Jimmy's not jumping … at least not anytime soon. With college coaches bolting left and right for greener grass, Jimmy Patsos likes it right where he is, thank you very much. While school was out, Patsos and the athletic department were busy finalizing a new five-year extension that will keep the fifth-year head coach on the sidelines at Reitz Arena until 2013.

Hounds offense can't deliver, shut out in Vettori's debut, 4-0

Hounds offense can't deliver, shut out in Vettori's debut, 4-0
By Dave Lomonico Sports Co-editor New women's soccer coach Katherine Vettori probably envisioned a better start to her Loyola coaching career than a 4-0 loss at the hands of Virginia in Charlottesville on Aug. 22. Then again, beating the No. 6 Wahoos on their home field would have taken a gallant effort from the Greyhounds, not quite on par with Appalachian State over Michigan.

'Wake up, eat, practice, eat, nap, practice, eat and bedtime'

By Amanda Piccirilli Staff Writer Well hello, Loyola College! I can't tell you how nice it is to see everyone back on the Evergreen campus, considering that I and the rest of my teammates on the Loyola women's soccer team have been here in Baltimore since August 6, where we've seen students from the men's soccer and women's volleyball teams and a few from summer school.
