Oh, what a difference one year can make. Coming into the 2007 campaign, the men's soccer team was touted as a young squad given the possibility to compete based upon pure talent. The same team was also taken with a grain of salt and viewed as being at least one year away from becoming any serious threat.

Every question of complacency seems to be answered as the men's soccer team showed their strength going 2-0 in the Black & Decker Soccer Classic, beating both Fordham and Hartwick 2-0, then extending their winning streak to three with a 2-1 victory at Towson on Sunday.

Like an offensive lineman in football or a catcher in baseball, soccer midfielders are the glue that holds the unit together. Underappreciated by casual fans but admired by teammates and coaches, midfielders define ruggedness, cohesion and nuance.

In their first meet of the season, the Loyola cross country team stocked its lineup with underclassmen in the Baltimore Metro Invitational at Towson, but the results resembled those of a veteran squad. The men, led by four freshmen and one sophomore, placed second in the six-team race behind Johns Hopkins.

Rest assured, Hounds fans, Jimmy's not jumping … at least not anytime soon. With college coaches bolting left and right for greener grass, Jimmy Patsos likes it right where he is, thank you very much. While school was out, Patsos and the athletic department were busy finalizing a new five-year extension that will keep the fifth-year head coach on the sidelines at Reitz Arena until 2013.

New women's soccer coach Katherine Vettori probably envisioned a better start to her Loyola coaching career than a 4-0 loss at the hands of Virginia in Charlottesville on Aug. 22. Then again, beating the No. 6 Wahoos on their home field would have taken a gallant effort from the Greyhounds, not quite on par with Appalachian State over Michigan.

Well hello, Loyola College! I can't tell you how nice it is to see everyone back on the Evergreen campus, considering that I and the rest of my teammates on the Loyola women's soccer team have been here in Baltimore since August 6, where we've seen students from the men's soccer and women's volleyball teams and a few from summer school.
